Speed was the te behind many of my 2013 projects. Several of the project videos above were about gigabit Internet, or bits traveling at the speed of light over fiber optics. As a video producer that’s a big deal to me since many of my video’s are over a gigabyte.
So what does that mean? It means there are many more towns, villages, and cities around the country, besides Kansas City and Provo, with Gigabit Internet. Google gets the attention while small service providers do it to support communities, get satisfaction, and make a profit. A few of t are in the playlist above.
Calix sent me, along with Ken Pyle, around the country filming on location to do stories about these companies. These are stories filmed and edited by HEM Production, with Viodi LLC, for the Calix Innovation Awards. The companies provide some really neat services you’d expect to get in the big cities but often only get in small towns that might be 40′ above sea level (see the ITS video).
Videos screened for the first time at Calix’s User Group Meeting in Las Vegas over the last few days. Close to 1,7oo people attended so lots of people watched, and Calix had a pretty good year to boot.
I picked the CenturyLink video to show first because a couple self proclaimed nerds show what it means to get gigabit… wow. They were fun to meet and film.
BTW. I’m not sure why they do this but speed is measured in bits, while files are measured in bytes. There a 8 bits in a byte so a 1 gigabyte file would take 8 seconds to send over a 1 gigabit connection. That is pretty fast considering it use to take me 4 hours to upload a 1GB file. It would take 8 seconds, not 1, but I’m good with the 7 second difference. 🙂
