Audence Award Winner at 2008 MNHS Film Project. Micky Axton is “Miss Micky”… Drawn to flying during the barnstorming 20’s she was one of the first women to become a test pilot during World War II. She was educated to become a pilot, recruited into the WASP by Jacqueline Cochran, became a test pilot in WWII, and was the first woman to fly the B-29. Also see Collections and Reflections.
On July 1, 2009 the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives recognized the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP’s) and passed public law 111-40 to award t a Congressional Gold Medal. This is a re-post from my 2008 MNHS documentary. It seemed deserving of an update.
March 2010 update… Micky would have received her Congressional Gold Medal on March 10, 2010. Unfortunately she passed away on February 6, 2010. I will certainly remember her for a long time, and saddened by her passing. She was remembered in her local Eden Prairie newspaper, recognized in Wikipedia, and reported on many times including an MPR News Story.
